Gifted and talented programming at Phalen Lake provides support to bright students in a variety of ways through individualized academic and enrichment based programs. Each student receives a unique combination of services based on his/her strengths, interests, affinities, and preferences.
We offer whole class enrichment around creative problem solving for grades K through 5.
Gifted children from 1st through 6th grade receive academic "compacting" in math (a process that involves pretesting for skills they have mastered, and then challenging those skills through special projects and lessons to make students even stronger).
Our younger advanced literacy students participate in Junior Great Books and Jacob's Ladder; programs are used for developing dialectic and advanced comprehension skills in gifted readers and writers. Older students (4th through 6th) participate in project-based book clubs and Socratic Seminar discussions, a process of questioning and connecting deeply to texts.
All of our identified students participate in the enrichment clubs of their choice. Our clubs include Lego Robotics, Journalism, and the Young Inventors' Club. Kindergarten and 1st graders receive the "Catalyst to Higher Level Thinking" program (a curriculum for developing creative problem solving skills in gifted learners). Our students also participate in many competitions including First Lego League, Word Master, Scripps Spelling Bees, and Continental Math League in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
As the gifted and talented specialists at Phalen Lake Elementary, we are excited to work with your children. Our gifted program puts creativity and exploration on equal footing with academic rigor. We are happy to talk to families or community members anytime to discuss what we might be able to do for you!
